STD cases among millennials are up nationwide — and are spiking in the five boroughs.
A recent study conducted by the city Health Department found that only one in three adults in New York City used a condom the last time they engaged in sexual intercourse. By comparison, two thirds of adults did not use a condom the last time they participated in sexual activity.
With an increasing number of New Yorkers who have had three or more sexual partners, the data collected from the study is concerning. The risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease (STD) is extremely high for those experiencing sexual activity with multiple partners without condoms. The average person is not aware that STDs can be transmitted through vaginal, oral and anal sex. When left untreated, STDs/STIs can cause serious damage to the reproductive organs in both men and women. With the exception of a few viral infections; Genital Herpes, Genital Warts, Hepatitis, HPV, and HIV infection (AIDS) are the most commonly contracted.
There are number of different convenient places for New Yorkers to get tested and treated for STDs. A top recommendation is Central Park Medical Associates which is part of a larger facility that also has a medical and dermatology practice where renowned dermatologist, Dr. Lawrence Jaeger, serves as the Medical Director. Central Park Medical provides HIV and STD testing with same day results. If treatment is required, Central Park Medical’s board-certified doctors can prescribe medications and work with patients to create a treatment plan.
